How about the citizenship by investment?

Citizenship means the legal rights and the duties of a citizen while a citizen essentially connotes a native of a state or a country. You will be pleasantly surprised to know that different countries follow different rules for allowing the citizenship by investment. The crux is that there are some countries that don’t allow citizenship by investment. We shall, however, confine our discussion here with the countries that allow the same and from a holistic angle. Because, if we start discussing every country’s rules governing the citizenship by investment, this space will definitely fall short to discussing the same.
Key areas for the citizenship by investment:
  1. Industrialisation: Even the most advanced countries like the UK and the US allow the citizenship by investment.  Taking a close look on the proposition of citizenship by investment, it naturally comes to our mind that the very purpose of launching this programme and continuing with the same till today must have been encouraged by the idea of having investment a.k.a. industrialisation in the country.
  2. Employment generation: Fast paced industrialisation will mean more jobs available to the different segments of the society including the semi-skilled and skilled workers.
  3. Revenue for the respective governments: In the face of the fast paced industrialisation and high employability quotient, the respective governments will benefit from the greater revenue base by way of taxes and others. They will also successfully offload the unemployment or the underemployment burden.
  4. Economic growth: Things like the higher rate of industrialisation thereby employment generation and increased revenue base ultimately contribute to the economic progress of the country. The citizenship by investment, therefore, comes as a unique choice.
  5. Conditional support: Countries that allow citizenship by investment usually extend a conditional support initially for a few years to the investors and at the end of the period, investors are accorded with the permanent citizenship. For instance, if a person makes a minimum invest of $500K to $1 million and maintains the same for four years in the US, he/she will be awarded the Green Card subject to fulfilling other conditions such as discharging the duties and responsibilities of a law-abiding citizen there. Again, the UK Tier 1 Investor Programme asks for a minimum investment of 2 million pounds for an easy path to the British citizenship and the British passport.
  6. Residency proof: Since there is no uniform practice among the countries that allow citizenship by investment, there are some countries that stick to the norm of having residency proof in some specific countries. For instance, Belgium Business Programme asks for a residency proof in European Financial Capital for an easy access to all Schengen Zone without a visa. This is, however, not to be construed as a pre-requisite for the citizenship by investment. Rather, it is a kind of conditional arrangement for some coveted benefits as mentioned above.
