Life Of Pi - Book Review

About The Book:

Canadian fantasy The Life Of Pi was first published in 2001. The essence of the book revolves around the life of a protagonist Piscine Molitor alias Pi Patel. He’s a boy from Pondicherry, India who explores spirituality in his own way from an early age. He miraculously survived 227 days in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker after his ship (in which he was travelling) met with an accident.

Pi, the son of a zookeeper, and his family boarded a Japanese cargo ship for travelling to North America along with their zoo animals.  Despite meeting with the shipwreck Pi manages to stay alive with the 450-pound Bengal tiger Richard in the lifeboat while he was actually lost in the sea. Pi has enormous knowledge on animal behaviours and thus he finally reaches the Mexico coast alive with Richard. But, Richard flees to the jungle and never returns.

On his landing to the Mexican coast the Japanese authorities begin to question Pi about the mishap and how he managed to survive. Pi tells authorities the truth; but the Japanese officials decline to accept.

The most fascinating part of Pi’s character is that he’s an avid story lover. So, when the Japanese authorities appear non-believer in him, he then narrates another concocted story that the officials accept in view of its proximity to reality.

The book Life Of Pi is available both in paperback and hardcover edition. Hardcover edition dates back to 2007 while paperback is of 2003. The book is published by Harcourt, Inc. in Singapore. The UK edition of the book won Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2002.

How to get silky hair?

Your silky hair is your prized possession and it does the talking for you in front of others. Do you remember, how very often the guys stared at you in the last wedding party?
You know what your silky hair actually complements your look. Why not then walk a mile extra for knowing things that can effectively help you maintain your silky hair?
How you get your silky hair?
There is no consensus on how one can get silky hair though; but majority of the hair experts opine in favor of a few points that are more or less universally applicable. We try to present a set of such tips and tricks here.
  1. Avoid daily wash: You should avoid daily wash, if you have a long hair and you stay in a dusty and humid area. The reason is: you have to then go for shampooing your hair on daily basis that will eventually take away your hair’s natural moisture and your hair will then start looking dull. Daily wash is recommended for the people who have neck long hair and don’t care about a ponytail.
  2. Say ‘No’ to dyes: Dyes do no good to your hair. They rather harm your hair’s wellbeing and takes away its natural moisture and brightness. Use of dyes over a period of time can make your hair brittle.
  3. Avoid heating: Use of heating instruments too must be avoided, if you aspire for a silky hair. Heat takes away the natural moisture of your hair and makes it brittle over a period of time.
  4. Oil your hair for sure: Oil is the basic ingredient for your hair care and its proper nourishment. You can effectively treat your hair with both normal and tepid oil. Processes are different.Apply normal oil on your hair for overnight and cover your head with a towel. You can also use egg oil or olive oil here. You must soak your hair with oil and massage your head gently while combing the hair with your fingers at regular intervals. Shampoo your hair in the next morning so that you hair gets rid of excess oil and doesn’t feel sticky. For hot oil treatment, first you prepare a mix comprising castor, coconut and almond oils. Heat them up until the mixture becomes tepid. Use this tepid mixture on your scalp and massage gently. Don’t use hot oils that can potentially harm your scalp, skin and hair. Avoid using hot oil treatment frequently that is known to premature graying.
  5. Take vitamin and supplements that nourish growth: Whatever you eat on daily basis might fall short to nourishing your hair properly. Taking vitamin and supplements can boost your hair growth and its health. Supplements enriched with vitamin C, B7 and B3 can work wonder for your hair.
  6. Trim split ends: Split ends of your hair are no good. Trim them off at regular intervals for a silky and vibrant look of your hair.

You as an individual should bring upon changes based on your country of origin and choose the advice here that best describes your purpose.

How to prevent dementia?

They say, prevention is better than cure. But, to our experience people fail to prevent dementia due to lack of knowledge and understanding on identifying and treating the early symptoms of dementia. Dementia can be prevented. Here, we present a blanket guideline for you.

Steps to prevent dementia:
  1. Eat healthy: Your wellbeing goes in direct proportion with your eating habit let alone dementia. With the growing age you have to plan your diet judiciously that can in effect prevent many a disease like dementia. At this point, one must remember that based on his/her BMI (Body Mass Index, a number that reflects one’s weight in relation to his/her height) he/she should chart out his/her menu card.
  2. Think better: Your thought is your key to wellbeing, especially from dementia to a great extent. Dementia in essence is a kind of persistent mental disorder resulting memory loss and brain disease or brain injury causes it. On many an occasion, you keep brooding thereby exert unnecessary pressure on your brain cells. Positive thoughts on the contrary will invigorate you and will help you prevent dementia.
  3. Exercise: Exercises circulate blood all throughout your body. Exercises therefore nourish your every organ. Some amount of aerobics such as brisk walk, swimming and cycling can surely help you prevent dementia. Alternatively, you can try out some yoga and pranayama. But, you must exercise regularly and at least for an hour each day. You can however observe a day off in a week.
  4. Quit smoking: Smoking doesn’t do any good. Why don’t you then give it up? Smoking potentially damages your lungs and brain cells directly. While puffing you are adding nicotine and carbon (tar) to a considerably high level to your blood stream that reaches your brain and other body parts. We advise you to be a little observant here during and after the smoking. You will feel somewhat dizziness or nervousness during those time. You smoking habit over a period of time, especially with your growing age, therefore takes a heavy toll on your health leading to dementia and other serious illnesses such as high BP (Blood Pressure), heart disease and bronchial disease.
  5. Quit alcohol: Quitting alcohol may sound nonsense; but with you growing age you must tread cautiously with your eating as well as drinking habits. If you can’t give up alcohol, we then advise you to control the drinking pattern – not more than a peg or two in a day. Increased presence of alcohol in the blood causes instability in the body system that in effect weakens your nerves. People with higher alcohol consumption habit are certainly at the high risk of dementia apart from other nervous disorders. We have seen heavy drinkers unable to write for their shaky hands.
  6. Maintain BP and weight: Maintaining your BP and weight at the desired level can be a shot in the arm for preventing dementia. Both BP and weight go in sync with your brain’s general wellbeing.

Steps discussed so far aren’t really conclusive for preventing dementia.

What causes dementia?

Dementia needs no introduction. It’s a brain disease caused by brain injury. This brain injury can be inflicted externally as well as internally. By saying so we mean, you can meet with an accident and therefore, your brain cells can be affected. On the other hand, you can suffer from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. In either case, you become a victim of dementia.
To know the cause of dementia you have to essentially know the type of dementia. Vascular dementia for instance is caused by less of blood supply to the brain cells that leads to the death of the brain cells over a period of time. Again, some of the dementia such as frontotemporal dementia (a diverse group of disorders that affect frontal and temporal lobes of the brain) can run into families.
Causes of dementia therefore can be manifold. We however outline here the most common ones for your general awareness and treatment.
  1. Alzheimer’s disease and dementia: It is the most common type of dementia that accounts for nearly 80 to 90 percent of the patients suffering from dementia. The grey matter of the brain process thoughts and does a lot of work as per the demand of the situation; namely - remembering and calculating. Alzheimer’s disease causes protein deposits (known as plaques and tangles) in the brain cells and makes the brain shrink.
  2. Frontotemporal dementia: Dementia is the family name of all those small disorders put together that result in progressive cell degeneration. When dementia is caused by the damage to the frontal lobe (areas behind your forehead) and temporal lobe (areas behind your ears) of the brain it is then called frontotemporal dementia. Frontotemporal dementia affects your behavior and personality as a whole.
  3. Vascular dementia: Vascular dementia is caused by the break in blood supply to the brain cells. When fat is continually deposited inside the walls of the blood vessels the path carrying the blood into the blood vessels then squeezes. A situation like this leads to break in blood supply to the brain cells causing their deaths.
  4. Lewy bodies dementia: This is caused by another type of protein formation inside the brain cells that look like roundish lumps and small in size. The exact reason for such protein deposits and how they cause brain damage leading to dementia are not yet known. But, Lewy bodies dementia is close to Parkinson’s disease.
  5. Brain tumor dementia: Brain tumor too can cause dementia. Tumor inside the brain causes blood vessels to narrow and stiffen. Brain tumors usually grow exponentially and some of them become malignant causing huge damage to the brain cells and dementia. The initial symptoms of brain tumor are severe and persistent headaches and seizures.
  6. High stress dementia: People in IT sector or in sales are usually subjected to high stress. Stress is followed by high blood pressure and depression. Over a period of time they affect the brain cells and dementia in the end.

From a commoner’s perspective dementia is a kind of memory loss. Things like alcohol abuse too can cause dementia.

What is the cause of dandruff?

Dandruff is essentially the white scale of the dead skins that are shed by the scalp from time to time. Dandruff is normal for a person who didn’t shampoo hair for a couple of days or had been exposed to severe weather conditions like extreme hot and humid. But, some people seem to suffer from dandruff perennially.

Causes of dandruff:
The exact reason for dandruff is not yet known, though scientists largely opine in favor of the lack of proper hair care and nourishment as the reason for dandruff. To our understanding and experience the possible reasons for dandruff can be as follows.
  1. Reluctance to hair brush use: You hair needs massage on daily basis. Your reluctance to hair brush use can potentially push your hair towards damage. The early symptom of your hair damage/loss is the dandruff that breeds out of such a situation. You hair brush essentially massages your scalp and the root of the hair. Use your hair brush at least four to five times a day.
  2. Oily skin: You just need normal skin for your proper hair growth and care. But, very few people are lucky like that. Majority of us either have oily or dry skin. Oily skin releases excess oil on the scalp that becomes the breeding ground for skin diseases and fungal infections. A situation like this favors the growth of dandruff.
  3. Dry skin: Dry skin on the other hand by default releases dead skins frequently. People with dry skin are often found struggling with dandruff throughout the year.
  4. Growth of yeast and other fungus: Funguses like yeast and malassezia are found on the human scalp. They usually don’t create any problem. But, they can grow up exponentially at times, if you don’t keep your scalp free from excess oil, dust and other micro particles on daily basis. Excess growth of these fungi can cause dandruff.
  5. Irregular shampooing: Irregular shampooing is conducive to the growth of dandruff. Shampoo essentially cleanses your hair and its root alongside the scalp. Shampoo your hair on regular basis based on your actual requirement. You are however the best judge here based on your origin country and its weather condition.
  6. Dementia: Dementia too can favor dandruff growth. Alzheimer’s disease for instance is known to cause dandruff in view of progressive cell degeneration.
  7. High stress: People working in high stress jobs such as IT (Information Technology), marketing and sales are very often at the risk of dandruff. High stress always associates with the imbalances in secretion of necessary hormones and others. This favors dandruff formation on their heads. Moreover, people in marketing and sales are to do a lot of field work and it very often exposes them to dust, hot and humid conditions. People in marketing and sales therefore quite often suffer from dandruff.
  8. Diseases that affect skin: Treat your skin disease prior to initiating treatment for dandruff. Skin diseases favor the dandruff growth.

We are still not done in our pursuit for finding reasons that favor dandruff growth. There can be many more reasons that contribute to its growth.
